Location and tax assumptions

The location factor adjusts labor only. Replace all default prices with actual local quotes before purchasing.

A coarse planning adjustment—not a ZIP-code quote.

Enter the tax rate that applies to taxable materials.

All default prices are editable examples. Cost scenarios vary the entered plan; they do not represent bids or guarantees.

How to use this topsoil calculator

Estimate topsoil cubic yards, bags, delivery, compaction, labor, and project cost.

Formula

Cubic yards = length × width × depth ÷ 12 ÷ 27. Multiply by 1 + settlement/waste %, then convert to full bags or supplier increments.

Worked example

Example: A 25 × 20 ft area topped with 2 in of soil needs about 3.09 cu yd before settlement. A 15% allowance raises that to about 3.55 cu yd.

Accuracy and limitations

Soil settles differently depending on composition, moisture, and compaction. Finished grades may require a site survey or multiple depth measurements.

Frequently asked questions

How much does topsoil settle?

It varies. A planning allowance helps, but supplier texture and installation method matter.

Can I use average depth on a slope?

Yes for a rough estimate, but take several depth measurements and divide irregular areas into sections.

Should I order bags or bulk soil?

Bulk is generally practical for multi-yard jobs; bags are easier for small or inaccessible areas.
