Location and tax assumptions

The location factor adjusts labor only. Replace all default prices with actual local quotes before purchasing.

A coarse planning adjustment—not a ZIP-code quote.

%

Enter the tax rate that applies to taxable materials.

All default prices are editable examples. Cost scenarios vary the entered plan; they do not represent bids or guarantees.

How to use this flooring calculator

Calculate flooring area, waste, boxes, underlayment, material cost, labor, and project totals.

Formula

Floor area = length × width. Order area = floor area × (1 + waste %). Boxes = order area ÷ coverage per box, rounded up.

Worked example

Example: A 15 × 12 ft room is 180 sq ft. With 10% waste, order for 198 sq ft. If each box covers 22.5 sq ft, buy 9 boxes.

Accuracy and limitations

Irregular rooms, diagonal layouts, herringbone patterns, stairs, and damaged subfloors require extra material or labor.

Frequently asked questions

How much waste should I add?

Straight layouts often use 7–10%; diagonal or patterned layouts commonly need more.

Should closets be included?

Include every area receiving the same flooring, including closets and connected alcoves.

Why round boxes up?

Flooring is sold in full cartons and extra matching material is useful for future repairs.
