How to use this ev home charging calculator

Estimate monthly and annual EV home-charging cost, electricity use, charging time, cost per 100 miles, gasoline savings, and charger installation payback.

Formula

Home-charged miles = annual miles × home charging %. Battery energy = home-charged miles × vehicle kWh per 100 miles ÷ 100. Meter energy = battery energy ÷ (1 − charging loss %). Annual charging cost = meter energy × electricity rate + monthly EV-specific fees × 12.

Worked example

Example: Driving 12,000 miles per year with 90% of the energy charged at home and efficiency of 28 kWh per 100 miles uses 3,024 kWh in the battery. With 10% charging loss, the meter supplies about 3,360 kWh. At $0.18 per kWh, that is about $605 per year before any fixed fee.

Accuracy and limitations

Actual cost depends on weather, speed, terrain, cabin conditioning, battery temperature, charging efficiency, utility rate design, demand charges, taxes, and public charging. Installation work may require permits, load calculations, service upgrades, and a qualified electrician. Savings and payback are simple comparisons, not guarantees.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my EV's kWh per 100 miles?

Use the recent trip or energy screen in the vehicle or app. A real seasonal average is usually more useful than a brochure figure.

Should I use my utility's average bill rate?

Use the marginal rate that applies when the vehicle charges. On a time-of-use plan, that may be an off-peak, mid-peak, or blended charging rate.

Does the payback include EV tax credits or rebates?

No. Enter the net installation cost only after independently verifying any incentive and eligibility requirements.

Why compare only home-charged miles?

The calculator does not know the price of your workplace or public charging. Restricting the comparison prevents those unmodeled costs from being treated as free.
